I had always thought there were two types of people in the world, those than run and those that don’t.
But this year I am going to turn my theory on its head.
I am going to start running.
Well what I mean to say is I am going to start running/walking programme the couch to 5k to be precise.
Let me point out I am not a runner! I have never been a runner. Sports Days at school made me quiver with fear (at the back) and of course I used my asthma as a means of preventing me.
I am a qualified fitness instructor and at one time (many moons ago) I would be teaching up to six classes a day, and these were high energy classes. I was fit…but could I run even then? Nope.
Many of my yoga clients are avid runners; yoga and running really compliment each other. There is a certain peace that accompanies running that repetitive motion allows your mind to clear and the path that lies before you allows you to focus on the horizon (these are all things I am told obviously not experienced first-hand) But I have of course experienced the peace and calmness that yoga can bring.
The right combination of yoga poses can help you stretch out and loosen up after your runs, keeping your muscles and joints healthy and of course preventing tightness.
So next week, Monday to be precise in case you see me, I am going to start my programme. Instead of heading straight home to the warmth and comfort of my house I am going to slip on my trainers and headphones and head into the night; wheezing all the way but hey we all have to start somewhere afterall a journey of a 1000 steps begins with that first step.
And in the meantime here are some yoga poses which are fantastic for runners.
